Private Forums / Private Groups

This subject has come up from time-to-time and been discussed, usually via PM, extensively almost from the launch of MRR.  The essence of the suggestion is... "We need a way to discuss things (beneficial bugs and exploits) in private so the Monkeys can't read about them and fix them in subsequent releases of RR3."

So, let's delve a bit deeper into our options...

We could make the forums viewable only by members.

This was done at the same time the site was migrated to the new server.  Anonymous visitors can now only see the original post of a thread, but not any of the replies - i.e. not the full discussion of each topic.  In the 10 days (as of this writing) since that change, more than 300 new members have joined MRR.  So, even if an FM employee was lurking here anonymously, who's to stop them from creating a member account like anyone else?

I think it's safe to say that this option won't keep the "sensitive" topics from the prying eyes of the Monkeys.

We could have private groups and only share information with other trusted members.

We are planning to add a private groups feature to the site, but it's more for members who want to have teams or just want to have discussions among their friends.  We don't really think it will solve the lurking Monkeys issue.  If it is to be used to share sensitive information in private, then we, as a community, are being selective as to who gets access to certain helpful tips - like the Indy 500, the 200 GC exploit, and Santa's Blessing, to name but a few.

If members only allow those members that they know and trust into their private groups, I dare say that would omit a majority of the members of this site.  Let's go back to those 300+ members who have joined in the past 10 days... do you know them?  Would you invite them to your group?  If you did invite new members that you don't really know, can you guarantee that they are not FM employees?

So this one really wouldn't work either.  And even if we could somehow accomplish this, there will always be those RR3 players who foolishly post comments about the beneficial bugs directly on FM's forum or Facebook page.

Our conclusion is that any measures we could implement to address this issue would only hinder the free exchange of information within our little community, and would not solve the real problem.
